A Wichita pastor said Wednesday that his mother, who is a Christian missionary in Liberia, is fighting the Ebola virus.Jeremy Writebol, associate pastor of the Journey the Way, a church in the Delano neighborhood, received a phone call Saturday from his father saying that his mother, Nancy Writebol, had tested positive for the virus. She has since been in isolation and is taking fluids to help fight the illness, which has killed nearly 700 people in the deadliest Ebola outbreak in history.“There is hope that she would recover,” Jeremy Writebol said Wednesday. “Statistically, there is a survival rate of 46 percent of those who contract the virus. The Kansas Highway Patrol will inspect more than 500 school buses Thursday to make sure they are ready to roll for a new school year.Officers were inspecting buses at the First Student bus lot in south Wichita beginning at about 8 a.m. Each bus must pass inspection before it can transport students.Officers inspect equipment and mechanical systems on each bus, including the brake system, steering system, fuel system, mirrors, lights, stop arm and emergency doors and exits, according to a news release from the Wichita school district.Read more

A 38-year-old man was critically injured Thursday morning in an industrial accident in Bel Aire, authorities said.The man was on the front end hoist of a Bobcat which was lifting construction materials to the second floor of an apartment complex being built in the 5600 block of North Lycee, near Northeast Magnet High School, when the materials dropped to the ground at about 10:30 a.m., Bel Aire Police Chief Darrell Atteberry said.The shift in weight prompted the Bobcat to roll back, flipping the victim over the back of the construction vehicle. Grammy winning singer Lyle Lovett will perform an acoustic show at Wichita’s Orpheum Theatre on Sept. 7, venue officials said Thursday morning.Lovett’s acoustic group is made up of several members of his large band and perform reinvented arrangements of his songs.Lovett performed at the Orpheum in 2010 and also as part of the Symphony in the Flint Hills the same year.Read more

Bethel Life Center is offering help to Wichitans in need Saturday with a Convoy of Hope Outreach event.Convoy of Hope, a Missouri-based nonprofit, provides assistance to people around the world through disaster relief and food distribution programs. The two faith-based organizations, Convoy and Bethel Life, are teaming up to provide Wichitans with a “poverty-free day,” as event coordinator Gail Starns calls it.The event – held at Bethel Life Center, 3777 S. Meridian, beginning at 10 a.m. – will have a variety of services and resources available.
